About Dum Dum Municipality


Dum Dum Municipality was formed in the year 1929 with 3.11sq Km of area. The then British Government used this area as their military base and cantonment area. After independence people from Bihar, UP, Orissa and erstwhile East Pakistan occupied the place vacated by cantonment board. In the year 1999 Govt. of West Bengal desired expansion of Dum Dum Municipality with adjoining rural areas of Sultanpur Gram Panchayats( I and II), Ward Number 1 and 4 (part) of South Dum Dum municipality and part of airport area incorporated in DDM leaving its present area of approximately 9.73 sq Km, i.e. about three times its past area.


As per census 2011, the population of DDM is 114786 and the present Population density of this town is 11797 per sq. km.



Dum Dum Municipality has one specialized hospital under its direct administrative control. Besides there are Health administrative Unit, four health sub centers and some private nursing homes. The Municipality takes part activity in all national immunization programs.


There are 24 number of primary schools and 17 number of Upper Primary Schools in this municipality. Again Sarojini Naidu College, the only women’s college in nearby area is under the jurisdiction of this Municipality. Besides there are 68 Anganwari centers under this Municipality.


Maximum of Dum Dum Municipal Area is connected with Road and Drainage net work. Municipal Authority gives special emphasis on maintenance of these infrastructures. Drainage water falls in outfall Canals but during heavy monsoon Canals, which are not under control of Municipality, have been found inadequate to take the load of excess water resulting inundation of Municipal Area.


Dum Dum Municipality provides treated surface water from 30MGD Trans Municipal Water Treatment Plant along with underground water from 32 numbers of deep tube well to its maximum citizens.


Sewerage network does not exist in Dum Dum Municipal area. In regard to solid waste management municipality has adopted the process of sanitary land filling outside its municipal area after collection of waste from individual household and then accumulating these waste materials before disposing it in land fill site.


Dum Dum municipality is the metro terminus resulting a record population growth. Further it is the gateway not only of this state but also of the country due to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

From the year of formation, DDM has had some important industrial sector like the Jessop & Co., Ordinance Factory under major control of Govt. of India. Later HMV (renamed as SARE GAMA) added one more feather of industrial crown of this Municipality. Heritage structures like Dum Dum Central Jail and monuments of Ordinance Factory are also places of interest. The municipality has four numbers of large playgrounds with some water bodies and parks, the scenic beauty of which are not negligible.



At first, I, on behalf of Board of Councillors of Dum Dum Municipality wish to thank and congratulate the people and all the stakeholders for their active co-operation.cm

Dum Dum Municipality intends to create an environment where citizens feel free to suggest better service delivery improvement mechanism and become part of Municipal Governance system. The functioning of the municipality will be effective and user-friendly to satisfy the need of the community to its fullest extent. Monitoring of citizens’ charter and grievance redressal will be achieved through system improvisation.

The municipality aims to achieve self-sustainability with hand-to-hand cooperation of the people and is committed to transform Dumdum into a model urban area where people will love to live in.

Our Municipality believes in the philosophy that it is the citizens of the town who are the primary stake-holders and should feel the ownership of every asset either existing or to be created in near future. Dum Dum Municipality will confirm participation of poor households in municipal developmental activities and ensure that poor families have adequate and equitable access to basic municipal services.

Dum Dum Municipality likes to see in future that it creates an example to others as a Municipality for the citizens, by the citizens and of the citizens.



Dum Dum Municipality gives special emphasis on implementing the physical infrastructure projects. Initiatives are taken to renovate the roads that are damaged in water pipeline works. Dum Dum Municipality has also taken initiatives to complete the undone works of BSUP. Tendering process to implement the schemes are already over and execution are under progress. Municipal Authority also taken up some drainage improvement works under Urban Wage Employment program. Keeping in view of coming monsoon, Desilting of Drains of entire Municipal Area is rapidly under progress.

Dum Dum Municipality also takes the initiatives of Beautification works on main entry points and along the road side and drain side lands. Hon’ble Member of Parliament and Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly are providing Funds from MPLADS & BEUP respectively to beautify Dum Dum.

Government funded AMRUT and Housing for All are also launched in this Municipality and after successful implementation of these projects all hopes that Dum Dum Municipality will be in such a position where people will like to fetch a dwelling unit in the region.


Weekly Chairman-in-Council meeting and monthly Board of Councilors meeting held in the Office of the Municipal Councilors of Dum Dum, throughout the calendar year. Besides, ward councilors of different wards discuss various issues with local people and different stakeholders in their respective ward offices.

Dum Dum Municipality with active cooperation of Local Police Station conducts Football Tournament in every year to promote sports among youth generation of this area.       


Municipal Authority takes the initiative to allot space to stack its own building materials to keep the Office Premises clean. Further, for better management of Sanitary Land Fill site Municipality approached the State Government for provision of Solid Waste Compactors. Appraising this innovative initiative, State Government sanctioned 2(two) number of Truck Chassis Mounted Mobile Compactor units which will operate in near future.
